The concept of Hydraulic Efficiency is based on the development of any activity or process using the minimum possible amount of water without affecting the quality of the results. Hydraulic Efficiency is a positive contribution to the social, cultural, economic and environmental development of society by progressively reducing the amount of water used in the daily operations.

The curent use of water, despite being unsustainable, hinders the development of other activities because of the lack of water available. To fight against this situation, we must design a process based on efficient use of water as well as saving and management technologies to free limited water resources for other activities.

Therefore, the main objective should be to promote a rational use of water at all activity levels that includes all productive and non-productive sectors such as industry, education, health, innovation, etc.

One of the challenges of water management policy is the uncertainty about future availability because of the global climate changes.

In Spain, the yearly urban water consumption is about 5.000m3, this value represent 20% of total water consumed. The average consumption per person is about 170 liters, ranging from the 190 liters in Andalucia and the 141 liters per person in La Rioja. The price of water also varies from place to place, ranging from 1,64 €/m3 in the Canary Islands to 0,61 €/m3 in Castilla.

It is evident that citizens are more conscious and are responding to the message about reducing water consumption from public officials and organizations. The effects of these messages however dissipate quickly and that is why is important to implement permanent water saving technologies.
